World Design Assembly Tokyo 2023 wraps up fruitfully.
We face numerous challenges like global warming which cannot be resolved at the national or regional level alone. At the same time, digital technologies have driven an irreversible evolution of human lifestyles as social networks speed the exchange of information.
The pandemic forced us to experience the real, physical world and the virtual world. This is truly the advent of a new way of living.
What does it mean to meet people? What is a friend, family, oneself? What is the significance of cultivating a sense of all-embracing love? In sweeping change, some find convenience and efficiency; others discern new facets of the human condition.
How to go about forging a new way of being for humankind on Earth, our unique planet? How to find joint cause with people we don’t know and with whom we don’t yet share a sense of connectedness? What future will we chart for ourselves?
As the world changes, so too design will evolve. Join us as we seek to move beyond all boundaries in considering a new tomorrow.
Can design transcend itself?
The World Design Assembly (WDA) is presented by World Design Organization every two years. It will be held in Tokyo in October 2023, the first time it returns to Japan in 34 years, having previously been held in Kyoto in 1973 and Nagoya in 1989.
About World Design Organization (WDO)®
World Design Organization (WDO)® is a globally recognized non-governmental organization that aims to promote and advance the discipline of industrial design and its power to enhance economic, social, cultural and environmental quality of life. Founded in 1957, WDO services over 190 member organizations around the world, engaging thousands of individual designers through our innovative programming and initiatives that champion ‘design for a better world’.
Main Theme
Based on the unique perspectives and topics brought by each keynote speaker, we will discover the "vision for tomorrow through design".
Theme 1: Humanity - Designing from a New Perspective on Human Identity
The panelists will discuss "new perspectives on human beings (autonomous, decentralized, digitally networked, terrestrial life, etc.)," considering specific approaches to the human condition, and what the role of design is in this process.
Theme 2: Planet - Designing for Environmental Problem Solutions
How can we drive and embody a Circular Economy society? What other measures are there to deal with global environmental issues besides the circular economy? From a broad perspective, we will consider what design can do.
Theme 3: Technology - Designing Digital Transformation
We will consider how digital transformation will change humanity in the coming age and what design can do, along with specific examples.
Theme 4: Policy - Designing the Future of Design Policies
Unlike the other three breakout sessions, this session will consider measures for social implementation of design for problem solving, based on the recognition of the issues in the keynote speeches. Discussions will be held from the two perspectives of "policies to promote design itself" and "social policies that utilize the power of design."

Research and Education Forum
The Research and Education Forum will take place on 27 October 2023, in conjunction with its 33rd World Design Assembly from 27 - 29 October 2023. Hosted at Chiba University's Research and Design Institute, this Forum is not only intended for academics and design students, but open to industry partners and private sector as well. The Forum will include keynote speakers, panel discussions and paper presentations. There will also be a poster exhibit on-site.
Theme
The theme Design Beyond will be further explored through three subthemes during our Research and Education Forum. Those wishing to submit a poster, paper or video should consider each subtheme and submit accordingly.
Theme 1: Design for Humanity
This track invites explorations and debates that leverage our understanding of design and designing for humanity. We invite contributions from various practice-based and thinking viewpoints that highlight projects where design plays a key role on social impact covering different dimensions such as design for peace, design for social change, design for social innovation, social inclusion, social cohesion, etc.
Theme 2: Design for Human-Centred Technology
Digital and physical technologies have radically transformed the way we live and work. Technology is one of the drivers of humanity’s future. As a product of humans, it exists because we have designed, made, financed, disseminated, accepted and use it. However, it can also embody the negative as much as positive qualities of humanity. As we look to the future, what could the role of technology be towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals? What can design for technology do to ensure social impact for the SDGs?
Theme 3: Behavioural Design for Planet
This track aims to highlight design research, training projects, educational tools and methods capable of generating products and services that trigger behavioural change for Planet Earth. These inspiring recommendations, would generate in individuals, as well as in communities, a new conscious and engaging push to change habits and adopt virtuous behaviours.

Kazuo Tanaka
Executive Committee Chairperson,
WORLD DESIGN ASSEMBLY TOKYO
Design has progressed as the economy and industry have grown, but we now find ourselves facing major challenges in connection with that progress. As is made evident by climate change, humankind’s boundless appetite is having a serious impact on our unique planet and its environment. The rapid development of digital technologies has transformed communication for many. In both work and learning, social networks have given us the ability to transcend time itself, prompting the world to reaffirm connections between people.
As the world changes, so too design will evolve. Design has an important role to play as we think about and create a future that remains as-yet unseen.
Design does not exist for industry and technology alone, but also for the life sciences, politics, economics, philosophy, and every area of human endeavor. Design provides a tool for transcending conventional wisdom and values, a system of thought that equips us to pioneer a new world.
What can design bring to design itself? Having transcended national borders, races, and generations, can design now transcend itself?
