Area Aid Design Projectは、東日本大震災からの復興に向けたデザイン関連機関によるプラットフォーム「Design for Japan」の一環として実施されています。
Following the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11th March 2011, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, a public interest incorporated foundation, launched the "Design Centre for Reconstruction Assistance" on 11th June 2011. The Centre will administer design activities that will help the reconstruction of areas aected by the disaster.
This "Area Aid Design Project: JDP Tohoku Ibaraki Design Promotion" is the Centre's core business and its aim is to support and promote manufacturing, design and creative enterprise in the Tohoku region and Ibaraki prefecture.
The areas severely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake have historically been rich in resources and they continue to have thriving manufacturing industries that utilise traditional methods and techniques handed down from ancient times. Furthermore, there are many sites developing and producing highly specialised products that require reliable technical capabilities. It is fair to say that these areas have cultivated many Japanese designs. However, the industry has suered in the aftermath of the earthquake, not only in terms of the direct impact on production and distribution systems but also indirectly due to harmful rumours.
The Japan Institute of Design Promotion considered the rebuilding of design-related businesses in the affected areas and developing new markets to be a pressing task and consequently launched the "Area Aid Design Project". The project will run for three years, mainly encouraging manufacturers and designers in the Tohoku region and Ibaraki prefecture to participate in design-related exhibitions and trade shows which we host or are involved in, as well as conducting PR activities for participants utilising our PR networks and communications infrastructure. Through this project, we aim to appeal to the public and to members of the design industry, both nationally and internationally, and possibly matching businesses to develop new distribution channels.
In our first year, 2011, 100 companies and designers from six prefectures in the Tohoku region (Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi and Fukushima) as well as from Ibaraki prefecture have taken part in the project. Starting with a special presence at the Good Design Expo 2011 held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center (aka Tokyo Big Sight), we will also participate in exhibitions in Taiwan and Hong Kong to be held during or after Autumn 2011 as well as holding an exhibition at the Tokyo Midtown Design Hub in spring 2012.
In making the "Area Aid Design Project" a reality we have had tremendous support from creative designers based at TRUNK |CREATIVE OFFICE SHARING, an innovative business incubation centre in Sendai-city. This support ranged from naming the project and designing the symbol logo to designing and producing information boards for exhibitions, website development, and providing English translation. With this proof, we are confident in the inherent strength of pool of creative talent in the Tohoku region.
Finally, we would like to express our profound gratitude to the sponsors and partners who showed great understanding of and support for our project, as well as to the companies and designers who have willingly participated in spite of the diculties they face.
