The origin of Kawatsura lacquerware dates back some 800 years, when farmers of Yuzawa City, Akita, started the lacquering of arms as their side job. According to records, the techniques were later applied to produce utensils such as wooden bowls, which led to the development of industrial infrastructure 400 years ago. Today, wooden bowls take up 60% of the Kawatsura lacquerware production, but the city is also known for products of all sizes and shapes, from chopsticks to furniture. Craftsmen make each item wholeheartedly and the finished products are inexpensive and fit for everyday use.
