硯は古来から文房四宝の王者と言われてきました。筆、紙、墨などと違って硯は何代にも渡って受け継がれていきます。宮城県石巻市雄勝町は全国の90％の生産量を誇っています。1985年に国の伝統的工芸品の指定を受けた600年の伝統と技が生きる硯石を使用したクラフト（石工芸品）は大変珍しく記念品、贈答品等に人気の商品です（現在は震災により販売活動を休止中）。
Inkstone is a traditional and treasurable stationery. Di erent from brushes, papers and ink, inkstone is usually inherited for several generations. Ogatsu-cho, Ishinomaki city, Miyagi prefecture is well known as inkstone production which is proud of 90% share of the whole country. Appointed as "national traditional handiwork" in 1985 with more than 600 year tradition and techinique, inkstone processing crafts are quite popular as memorial or special gift. (Currently the sales are interrupted because of the earthquake disaster.)
